By the time I arrived at Blind Tiger Ale House around 3 p.m. on a recent Friday afternoon, the bar was already beginning to fill with nearby office workers slamming their laptops shut for the weekend.
I was soon joined by Tara Turner, the Blind Tiger’s general manager, who frequently stops to greet a regular or chat with a bartender. That kind of good vibe is part of the reason Blind Tiger became an unlikely backdrop for a reality TV scandal so big it has put not one but two of Bravo TV shows’ futures in question and has been discussed by the likes of Rihanna, Sydney Sweeney, Jon Hamm and Lena Dunham.
A betrayal hasn't strayed this far into the zeitgeist or rattled Bravo's foundation this deeply since CNN made "Scandoval" a breaking news push notification in 2023. The relationship of “Summer House” stars Amanda Batula and West Wilson has dominated the extended Bravo-verse for the better part of 2026.
In case you’re not caught up, here are the bullet points: The controversy stems from Wilson’s previous relationship with fellow “Summer House” cast member Ciara Miller, one of Batula’s closest friends. The relationship also began not long after the announcement that Batula and her husband, founding “Summer House” occupant Kyle Cooke, also a friend of Wilson’s, were separating after nearly five years of marriage. To say that the reaction to the Batula-Wilson relationship, steeped in the romantic and friendship betrayal of Miller, was met with outrage from the show’s fanbase would be a tremendous understatement.
This week’s emotional “Summer House” season 10 finale set the stage for an explosive three-part reunion where Cook, Miller, Batula, Wilson and the rest of the cast will square off, as well as the premiere of spinoff series “In the City,” which will, among other things, chronicle the dissolution of Batula and Cook’s marriage.
The speculation that may have once stayed confined to Bravo recap podcasts and Reddit quickly began showing up in real-life discussions, absorbing even Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who was asked about the scandal in a street interview. To his credit, Mamdani wasn’t up to date on the shenanigans, but did thank Miller for her service as a nurse. (Mamdani’s senior adviser, Zara Rahim, later commented that City Hall was unofficially Team Ciara).
Ultimately, the drama landed right on Blind Tiger’s doorstep.
According to Turner, a self-professed Bravo-holic, one of the pair’s earliest public appearances, which ramped up speculation about their relationship, happened quietly during February’s massive snowstorm.
“It was one of the blizzard days,” Turner said. “I clocked him because I knew who he was, but I didn’t think anything of it.”
Wilson, Turner explained, had already been coming into Blind Tiger semi-regularly through a friend connected to one of the bartenders. The unassuming bar tucked on Bleecker Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues, is less an influencer hotspot and more of a neighborhood institution, and recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. Patrons come to the Blind Tiger for its deep bench of craft beers, grilled cheese and tomato soup, and its cozy fireplace; those looking to spot celebrities generally need to venture a few blocks away.
That particular Friday in April, when Batula and Wilson were ostensibly making their society debut as a couple, they arrived to meet friends in the late afternoon, before the after-work crowd took over the bar. Turner said the pair initially blended into the room without much issue. But then, in real time, photos started circulating on social media of Wilson and Batula in the early evening.
Then the internet showed up in person.
One of Turner’s friends, another Bravo obsessive, had been at a nearby bar when he saw on social media that Batula and Wilson were hard-launching their situationship a stone’s throw away at the Blind Tiger. He rushed over to see for himself, grabbing a quick Instagram story with the pair in the background. He still had the drink from the other bar in his hand.
Others soon followed.
“You could tell people were coming in specifically looking for them,” Turner said.
“People started taking photos,” she said. “That was different.”
Kara Berry, host of the Bravo podcast "Everyone’s Business But Mine" and a New Yorker, said the reaction made sense given both the scandal and the geography.
“For a generation of people who consider Deux Moi their real-life ‘Gossip Girl,’ people like to break a story,” Berry said. “People like to be in the room.”
The day after Wilson's and Batula’s visit, Turner said Blind Tiger experienced “the single busiest day in Blind Tiger history.”
“Saturday is already our busiest day of the week anyway,” she said. “But it was extra, extra crazy busy.”
Some customers arrived without even ordering drinks, Turner said, simply walking in to see if the couple might somehow still be there. One bartender noticed another shift.
“He said, ‘It feels like the girls are extra dressed up tonight,’” Turner recalled. She also recalled that many of her bartenders were not up on the “Summer House” lore or the current scandal, adding to the dissonance of this sudden uptick in fashion and draft pints.
The attention did not stay confined to the bar’s physical confines. “We started catching strays in the comments,” Turner said. Some Bravo fans even jokingly asked whether staff had said anything to the couple or refused to serve them.
“Obviously, we served them,” Turner said, laughing. “Of course.”
She doesn’t think they chose the bar for any particular reason other than comfort. “I honestly don’t think it was strategic at all,” Turner said.
She added: “They were just going somewhere they already felt comfortable. I wouldn’t want them to feel like, ‘Oh no, we can’t go to Blind Tiger, we’re going to get bothered.’”
Berry was less convinced the night was accidental. That same night after they visited Blind Tiger, Batula and Wilson were spotted at Barrow Ale House and Emmett’s on Grove. All Three bars have the veneer of low-key local haunts that are casual, crowded and familiar to New Yorkers, but not exactly anonymous.
Even some of the attempts at subtlety seemed antithetical to the notion of being incognito. At one point, Turner recalled, Batula pulled a scarf over her head in an effort to keep a low profile.
“I was like, that’s more obvious,” Turner said.
Berry agreed.
“I don’t know how you could be anywhere with a sweater draped over you like Little Edie and not expect people to look,” she said. “It’s very ‘Look at me, but don’t look at me.’”
If they weren’t trying to be spotted, she said, “definitely don’t be anywhere in the West Village on a Friday night.”
