After much confusion and rumors that the race would be starting in Sunset Park... the 2010 Idiotarod has officially begun! The starting point is at Cooper Park in Williamsburg, where teams are awaiting the start signal and the temperature is a brisk 17 degrees! Send us any photos (or tag them "Gothamist" on Flickr) and dirty details you may have as a racer, spectator or passerby—we'll be updating as the race goes on. We're especially interested in seeing this Ghostbusters team (while throwing food is not allowed this year... we're hoping they're packing some green slime).
UPDATE: And they're off! Currently, around noon, the carts are storming through the streets of Greenpoint. This is a good time to note that there was no entry fee this year, but there will be an after party that will cost 10 bucks. No word on where that is yet.
UPDATE II: One onlooker Tweets, "stragglers coming through. A lone clown, running. God, this is terrifying. Sinister. He doesn't even have a shopping cart."
UPDATE III:: Word on the street at 1:30 p.m. is that the Idiots are at TBD on Franklin in Greenpoint and are headed north to LIC Bar in Long Island City for the end of the race.
UPDATE IV: We're hearing rumors the carts are on the move to Astoria, as of around 3:15 p.m.
UPDATE V: Now (4:15 p.m.) we hear there's an after party happening at Wunderbar in LIC.
