We had a good run, sort of: MoviePass, the inexplicably affordable ticket subscription service, may finally be reaching the end of its road. After a roller coaster weekend of service outages and assurances from the company that—despite an emergency $5 million dollar bailout from its parent company, Helios and Matheson Analytics, to cover its debts—the app had regained "stability at 100%," customers continued to report chaos on Monday. That, combined with the news that the NASDAQ may boot Helios and Matheson from its exchange due to terminally low stock prices, suggests that the frustration film buffs are now experiencing may well be MoviePass's death rattle.

For now, however, users who signed up for a $9.95 monthly subscription can expect to see that fee inflated to $14.95, for the privilege of pre-paid and wildly unpredictable access to select theaters.

According to CNN Money, Helios and Matheson shares topped out at 80 cents on Monday, even after financial sorcery that raised prices from 8 cents to $21 per share last week. According to Business Insider, MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe told employees in an all-hands meeting yesterday that the app would not be offering tickets to upcoming blockbusters Christopher Robin and The Meg to subscribers—this after MoviePass blocked users from booking seats at Mission Impossible: Fallout showings all weekend.

Lowe also implied that the company would strike major releases from its menu for good, even after introducing surge pricing to cover costs for high-demand screenings, a source told Business Insider. According to longtime MoviePass subscriber Danny O'Neill, who sent Gothamist a screenshot from the app on Monday afternoon, showtimes at his favorite theaters were still listed as unavailable, even as the company told us in a statement that it had "handled issues on the back-end" and restored full functionality.

Other users attested to the same lapse on a MoviePass subreddit, and Mashable's entertainment editor found herself unable to access a full slate of local Manhattan showtimes. This morning, I checked the app myself, and while most local theaters did list screenings, three remained grayed out.

There is widespread concern among subscribers and analysts that MoviePass, a company whose whole thing is spending money without pulling any in, may soon fold. And yeah, deals this good—one movie a day at the all-too-low price of $10 per month!!!—could never have lasted forever.
