A baby goat or "loose lamb" was seen darting along the Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn this morning, as Twitter user @jamesh173 first noted. [UPDATE, March 14, 2019: The lamb was rescued by the police—more details below!]

People who saw the tiny animal running along the highway weren't entirely sure at first if it was a baby goat or a lamb. The two can bear a physical resemblance but are different species, and the easiest way to tell, Quora notes, is by looking at their tails (goat's tails typically point heavenwards, while sheep's tails point downwards).

An NYPD confirmed to Gothamist that it was indeed a little goat running on the highway, and they first received the call around 9:18 a.m. Highway patrol apprehended the runaway animal near the 30th Street exit in Sunset Park. The goat is still at scene, and they're waiting for a cage, NYPD notes.

It's still unclear where the goat came from, or what compelled them to run on the highway this morning. We'll update when we hear more.
