With The Simpsons airing its 500th episode on Sunday (featuring Julian Assange), tributes to the longest-running primetime TV series are popping up everywhere this week—from sleep-deprived marathons to synergistically-minded fashion designer Jeremy Scott, who attempted to capture the spirit of the '90s yesterday during Fashion Week: "I fell madly in love with Bart. And I’m not even the diehard every-episode fan. It’s just such a part of pop culture. Bart is a nineties teen icon." What, no room for grunge Homer?
Scott, whose previous pop culture collections included those inspired by The Flinstones and Mickey Mouse, told The Hollywood Reporter he was dreaming of things he wanted to wear when he came up with the 8 Bart Simpson pieces. And Fox, who holds lock and key over all Simpsons merchandising, totally got his vision: "I wasn’t really sure how to go about this. I got someone on the phone and took it from there. And it was kismet, synergy, this was supposed to happen. They totally got it: the way I am, who I am. They seemed very aware of my work and were very enthusiastic."
Of course, we're not sure how his Pantone yellow Simpsons homages might tie-in with his upcoming Fall 2012 collection, which "was inspired by the computer, and the way information is disseminated today." But if Scott wanted to conjure up memories of "Do The Bartman" and Butterfingers commercials, it worked for us—and maybe after another 500 episodes or so, someone will finally make Malk, our favorite Simpsons merch, a real thing.
