Bushwick got its first ice cream parlor this weekend, and while its presence probably won't do much to help alleviate those obscenely rising rents, it's certainly a welcome respite from all the bars and restaurants that have opened over the past year. Called the Evergreen Ice Cream Co., this new spot, marked by an old deli awning sits between the Morgan L stop and the Myrtle-Broadway stop on the J, serves a variety of ice cream flavors from its cozy, exposed brick-walled space.
Evergreen's the brainchild of Francisco Garcia, whose family has owned the building the parlor's housed in for years ("They've seen a lot of change," he told us). The ice cream isn't made on site, but shipped in from fellow North Brooklyn frozen-treat makers Phin & Phebes along with fancy Hudson Valley handmade ice creamers Jane's. Garcia says they'll be offering an array of rotating flavors, which include basics like vanilla, dark chocolate and and mint chip in addition to funkier additions like Vietnamese iced coffee, sweet cream with wild blueberry lemon cookies and green tea.
Daily flavors are listed on a chalkboard by the counter, and you can order sundaes ($7.50-$8) egg creams ($4) and make-your-own floats ($5) too; cones run $3 for a single scoop, $5 for a double, $7 for a triple and an extra buck for a waffle cone hand-rolled in the shop. We tried a waffle cone, and it was super fresh and sweet—definitely spring for it.
Garcia says he also plans to offer homemade sodas and sandwiches in the near future; we're looking forward to more new additions as the frozen-treat season starts to roll in.
The Evergreen Ice Cream Co. is located at 144 Evergreen Ave between Jefferson and Troutman Street in Bushwick, Brooklyn (evergreenbk.co). Follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
