Certain websites aside, we always thought New York was actually a pretty good town for getting tips, what with all the big spenders here and the many professionals whose livelihood depends on tips. And we are! But you know who apparently tips better? New Hampshireites. And Alaskans. And Wisconsinites. Also? People from Nevada, Florida, Arizona, Connecticut, Kentucky, Maine, Hawaii, Vermont, and Alabama. According to research from Marketplace, they beat us on when it comes to average tips given on $20 sit-down meals.
According to Marketplace's research—which also included average tips for food delivery, takeout, bellhop service, haircuts, cab rides, coffee shops, and cleaning services—New York is "just slightly above average" in the tipping department. Of course, all of their averages are for New York State, not the city. And while Albany may be a lot of things, you never really hear about the great service opportunities there. We'd like to think (but have nothing to back up our hunch) that New York City would do better in this case standing on its own—another reason to secede!
Apparently the average New Yorker tips 20.5 percent on a $20 sit down dinner, $3.94 on the average food delivery and $.32 on the average takeout meal. Does that sound about right to you?
