Finding the "city's best" of anything is a daunting task, requiring months or years of scouring every diner, deli and overpriced restaurant many times over. In just the past two years news outlets have named Peter Luger, Burger Joint, Best Burger and Shakes, and Bagatelle as having the best, and now the Daily News is getting in on the action for 2011. They recently named West Village standby Corner Bistro's burger the best in the city, which they call the "kind of fresh off-the-grill burger that reminds you of backyard BBQs." What, no Kobe?
Dumont in Williamsburg came in second place for their $14.50 burger served on a brioche bun, as did Crosstown Diner in the Bronx for their $8.59 cheeseburger deluxe made from local ingredients. One commenter wrote, "Forget the five guys, good guy, or better burgers, for the juiciest, tastiest cheeseburger, you need to go to Crosstown." However, there is a debate! Other commenters named Duffy's in Staten Island, Roll N Roaster in Sheepshead Bay and Golden Eagle in Morris Park, and a quick survey of Gothamist editors mentions Paul's on Second Avenue, Petey's in Astoria, Jackson Hole and Shake Shack. And we're sure you'll remind us of many places we left out.
