A man killed his sister and critically injured their mother before fatally shooting himself in a Bronx apartment building early Thursday, police said.
NYPD officials said the incident unfolded just before 8 a.m., when police officers responded to a call about multiple shots fired inside the building on Johnson Avenue near Kappock Street in Spuyten Duyvil.
The officers found 55-year-old Mario Garcia and his 59-year-old sister Maria Garcia both shot in their heads, and their 86-year-old mother shot in her face.
First responders pronounced the siblings dead at the scene, according to the NYPD. Police said Maria Garcia lived in the building.
Officials said Mario Garcia was a Port Authority police officer, but they are still investigating whether he was actively serving in the force. The Port Authority Police Department declined to comment and referred inquiries about the incident to the NYPD.
Maria Garcia had previously worked for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council, according to the organization and her LinkedIn profile.
“For those of us fortunate enough to know Maria, she was an amazing person both personally and professionally,” executive director Adam Levine said in a statement. “We are shocked and very sad to hear of this incredible tragedy.”

Garcia more recently worked on planning and infrastructure at the New York Department of State, which featured her last spring in a social media post for Women’s History Month. The department did not immediately respond to an inquiry Friday.
Officials said Friday the shooting may have stemmed from a dispute between the siblings about providing care for their mother. She was taken to Harlem Hospital, where police said she was still in critical but stable condition.
Police did not make any arrests in the case.
