A 5-year-old girl is recovering after she was grazed by a stray bullet on a Bronx street Wednesday afternoon, police said.

NYPD officials said the child was standing with her mother on Southern Boulevard and Aldus Street in Longwood around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when three people opened fire. The girl's ear was grazed and she was taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition, officials said.

The alleged shooters ran south on the boulevard toward East 163rd Street, according to the NYPD. Police said one was wearing green headgear, a black sweater and a brown backpack, the second was wearing a black sweater, black sweatpants and a black backpack, and the third was in a black sweater with a white logo on the back, gray jeans and black sneakers.

Authorities said the girl was not the shooting's intended target. They said they were still investigating a motive for the violence in the busy commercial area.

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson called the incident “disturbing and completely unacceptable” in a post on X.

“We are praying for healing for our 5-year old,” she said.

Police data shows there were two other shootings so far this year through May 10 in the 41st Precinct, which includes Longwood and Hunts Point. That was one more than in the same period last year.

Across the Bronx, shootings are down by more than 16% so far in 2026, according to the data.

The NYPD is asking anyone with information about the incident to call its Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS (8477) or, for Spanish, 888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips on the Crime Stoppers website.
