The NYPD is boosting patrols at college campuses across New York City after a deadly shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island, authorities said on Sunday.

Two students were killed and nine others were wounded on Saturday afternoon after a gunman opened fire inside a classroom during final exams, according to the Associated Press. A person of interest was reportedly taken into custody early Sunday at a hotel outside Providence, but police have not yet shared a motive.

At a press conference Sunday, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the department is acting out of caution, not because of any specific threat.

“We have deployed additional resources to college and university campuses throughout the city as a precaution,” she said.

Tisch added that there is currently “no known nexus to New York City.”
