Dangerous heat and humidity will once again grip New York City this week as another cycle of sizzling air moves through.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the five boroughs and surrounding areas Tuesday and Wednesday, with temperatures expected to climb back to the 90s with real-feel values in the low 100s.

“ We're going to rival the heat wave we had a couple weeks back,” said NWS meteorologist Jay Engle, referring to the scorching stretch of days around the Fourth of July.

Engle said the heat and humidity will start in earnest on Tuesday, and will peak during the day on Wednesday.

“This is gonna be a problem, especially for those that are more vulnerable in the population,” Engle said. “ You want to drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol. Beverages with electrolytes are best because that protects against heat stress.”

Other tips to avoid heat-related illnesses: limit time outside in the sun, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and take regular breaks in the shade, Engle said. Those without access to air conditioning may also be able to visit New York City’s cooling centers. The city said it will open hundreds of cooling centers Tuesday and Wednesday. New Yorkers can find locations, including accessible and pet-friendly sites, at finder.nyc.gov/coolingcenters or by calling 311.

Thursday and Friday should bring some relief with lower humidity, though temperatures will stay in the 90s, according to meteorologists.

“It's likely by Thursday that the heat advisories will be discontinued, but we'll have to see if the forecast changes,” Engle said.

The humidity may start to creep back up again over the weekend, in time for Sunday’s World Cup Final, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium.
