A 91-year-old woman crossing East Gun Hill Road at DeKalb yesterday morning was hit by a tractor-trailer. Anna Rogovin had been walking to the senior center when she was hit and her legs crushed. It is also possible that a second vehicle hit her.
Rogovin was comforted by witnesses; one said another woman held her until the ambulance came, "She had [Rogovin's] head in her lap. Her legs were smashed...Everybody was screaming and crying in the street." Some said that the truck did have the green light; one neighbor who had helped Rogovin, who walks with a cane, cross the street before, told the Post, "She'd walk very, very slow. By the time we'd get to the other side, the light would have changed."
Rogovin is in critical condition at St. Barnabas Hospital. Police believe it was an accident but are still looking for the truck driver. A neighbor seethed to the Daily News, "The truck did not stop. It kept going. How would he feel if it was his mom? He just hit her and kept going."
