A husband and wife's date night went horribly wrong when he attempted to keep his wife from getting behind the wheel after she had too much to drink. Douglas Bolando is in critical condition at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, and his wife, Sandra, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, vehicular assault and leaving the scene of an accident with serious injuries.
Police told Newsday (subscription required) the couple had been out at a bar early Saturday morning, returned to their home and continued drinking. Around 3:15 a.m. Sandra wanted to go out again, and went out to start their Dodge pickup. Knowing she was too drunk to drive, Douglas jumped on the hood of the car in an attempt to stop her. Sandra started to drive anyway, and after turning onto Railroad Avenue, Douglas slipped off and struck his head on the road. She continued to drive, apparently oblivious of her husband's injuries. First Squad Det. Sgt. Kevin Naylor said, "It was just a night out that got out of control."
Sandra was later apprehended and charged, though she refused to take a breathalyzer test. Douglas is in the hospital with severe head trauma, including a fractured skull. The couple has two kids, ages 4 and 6, and neighbors told the Post the night was supposed to be a relaxing date without the kids. Det. Naylor said there has been no history of domestic abuse at the house. "It’s a shame. Otherwise they seem they’re a good, solid, hardworking couple.”
