A cold front passing through New York City late Wednesday night will bring cooler temperatures and a wintry mix of rain and snow on Thursday.
Temperatures in the city were expected to stay mild Wednesday, with highs around 50 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. But by Wednesday night, a low-pressure system will usher in colder air and temperatures will drop into the 30s.
It’ll also bring light showers on Wednesday night, transitioning to a mix of rain with a chance of snow showers Thursday morning, according to the NWS. Highs should linger in the upper 30s on Thursday.
“ It does look like it's going to be very light overall, so accumulations are going to be very minor, probably with the city really only getting trace amounts — not really anything measurable as far as the snow's concerned,” said NWS meteorologist Bryan Ramsey.
Things will get really cold on Thursday night as temperatures plunge into the 20s, with some outlying areas seeing temperatures in the teens, according to the NWS. Things will stay chilly Friday as well.
Ramsey said a “disorganized” series of weather systems over the weekend and into next week will bring more cold air and scattered snow.
“ Since they're disorganized, we're not expecting things to be very potent or strong,” he said.
Temperatures will turn back up into the low 40s on Saturday before dropping back down overnight, with highs around freezing on Sunday, according to the NWS. That means the rain on roads won’t have the chance to evaporate and could freeze instead, making for potentially icy conditions, Ramsey said.
“ Possible we could have some like black ice issues on Saturday night,,” he said. “It’s possible morning commuters on Sunday could have some issues, but Sunday's not a big commute day, which is good.”
