Next February the grandest train station we've got left, Grand Central Terminal, turns 100. And, we learned today, the MTA is looking to celebrate that achievement in style all year long. Speaking of style, Caroline Kennedy is the honorary chair of the terminal's centennial committee. The committee also boasts Spike Lee, so you know those are going to be fun meetings.
Still, don't worry: The actual head of the committee is former MTA chairman Peter Stangl. So what are they planning? Among the ideas for the big 1-0-0 are a sprucing up of the entrance from the street into Vanderbilt Hall, a gala party at the station, a parade of historic trains, special commemorative MetroCards and more. The Terminal will also begin soliciting bids for another restaurant (sure!). Now if they can just persuade Apple to offer some birthday discounts when the old girl turns 100 on February 1, 2013 we'll all be set... Just no flash mobs, mmkay?
