City officials are investigating the discovery of a human skull along the Coney Island boardwalk in Brooklyn this week.

A passerby called 911 about human remains in the bushes next to the Riegelmann Boardwalk around 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to the NYPD. Officers arrived at the scene and found the skull between West 32nd and 33rd streets, toward the western end of the peninsula, police said.

City medical examiners will study the skull’s origins and how it ended up near the boardwalk, officials said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner did not immediately respond to an inquiry early Thursday.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and may be updated.
