With the euphoria of the Super Bowl finally wearing off, football fans, bloggers, reporters and caricaturists all have to face the fact that there are over 200 hundred days until the next season starts. Which means football fans have nothing better to do for the next 208 days than debate statistical/nerdgasm questions back and forth. Which is how we got to a point where everyone and their mother is asking: has Eli Manning now booked himself a one-way-ticket to the NFL Hall Of Fame?
According to former teammate (and possible Hall Of Famer) Kurt Warner, nope. Despite two Super Bowl rings, and a career that has gotten better just about every season, Warner isn't convinced Eli has the numbers yet to justify being in the Hall, as he told KTAR-AM 620 in Phoenix yesterday:
He's had two great playoff runs, or his team has had two great playoff runs. But I also look at the rest of his career. I mean, he has an 82 ... quarterback rating throughout his career. You know, he's had five of his eight seasons where he has thrown 16 interceptions or more. His completion percentage on his career is 58 percent. To me, those aren't Hall of Fame numbers and by that I mean every time you step on the field you're a game changer, you're a difference maker. And I don't believe Eli Manning has been that guy until this year. I think this year is the first time in his career when he's become that guy.
Newsday has a breakdown of Manning's stats against all the other Hall of Fame quarterbacks at his age which suggests that Warner is very, very wrong—Manning has better stats at 30 than Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, and even John Elway. Bleacher Report thinks that while Eli wouldn't make the Hall if he retired today, it looks more and more likely that he will make it if he just continues playing as he has been playing.
So here are a few things Manning can do to make sure he's a lock for the Hall of Fame: win another Super Bowl, get a regular season MVP, and get over 40K yards passing. Most importantly, don't get injured and keep making those adorable Manningfaces. Oh, and don't pull a Plaxico. But we're not too worried about that—after all, the kid has just started shaving!
