At an intersection in West Milford, NJ ("A Clean Community") stands one of the nation's unsung landmarks. Standing at the intersection of Route 23 and Clinton Road the "longest traffic light in America." Well, it's actually two lights, but the combined wait time at the intersection is nearly five minutes.
Resident Ed Logan told WABC, "I live a mile north of here, getting home takes me a minute or two, coming back takes 15 minutes because of this light." The two lights are timed to last up to two minutes and 45 seconds when red. Their green lights last just eight seconds. The Department of Transportation has no intention of changing the lights, since they're timed to ease rush hour congestion, and besides, what do people in West Milford have to do that's so important anyway? For comparison, NYC traffic can slow to just 9.3 mph on some days, which is totally unacceptable.
