After five innings, the Mets trailed 6-1 and the game looked lost. But, as they have shown recently, the Mets had a comeback in them, this one occurring in the eighth inning of their 8-6 victory. The six-run explosion made a winner out of Raul Valdes and included several big moments. Rod Barajas had a huge two-run double that brought the Mets to within a run. But no hit was bigger than the Chris Carter, the newest Met, who provided a pinch-hit double to score the go-ahead and eventual winning run in his debut. K-Rod closed down the Nats in the ninth with help from another circus catch by Ike Davis to end the game.
The Yankees were rained out, so they will play a double header in Detroit. Javier Vazquez will be pitching the day game, Phil Hughes in the night game.
