A man who refused to pay for a ride on a B82 bus in Brooklyn Tuesday morning tried to shoot MTA employees, according to police.
The bus had stopped at a corner when the man tried to board without paying. After he was kicked off, the bus departed and the man fired several rounds at MTA workers who were not on the bus, according to information provided by the NYPD.
Officers responding to the scene at Flatlands and Louisiana avenues around 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday reported no major injuries. Later in the day, police said a worker had been grazed by one of the bullets and is being treated, though the injury was not severe.
The shooter fled on foot, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
MTA Chairman Janno Lieber said the man was asked to leave by the MTA's fare enforcement team, known as the "Eagle Team," after refusing to pay his fare.
"There was somebody who had a MetroCard on him who for some reason didn't want to pay the fare. They did their job: They asked him to get off the bus, low and behold he produced a .45 and took shots at our employees," Lieber said Tuesday. "Part of the reason for doing fare enforcement is catching people who are trying to bring weapons onto the system."
Police were examining surveillance video, but had not yet identified a suspect by Tuesday afternoon.
