Migdalia Vera, the 57-year-old Queens mother accused of stabbing her 39-year-old disabled son to death before trying to take her own life, was denied bail yesterday. The denial was made after she gave police inconsistent stories while being treated in New York Hospital Queens last week.
In a hospital arraignment piped into Queens Supreme Court, Vera said her son Rene, who suffered from cerebral palsy, asked her to kill him so he wouldn't be alone if she died. "Rene handed me the knife and repeated, 'Do it."
"I told him I did not want to do it. He then took the knife and stabbed himself...He then kept begging me not to leave him alone and kept asking me to kill him. I then took the knife that was on top of the bed. I picked up the knife and stabbed him in the chest.
"I then tried to go with my son by cutting my wrists but I could not do it because my hands were shaking," she said.
Vera is being charged with second-degree murder and faces 25 years to life in prison.
