The MTA bus that fatally struck a bicyclist has been found. The Post reports that the express bus, which kept going because the apparently driver didn't realize he hit someone at Second Avenue and East 96th Street, "was identified once it arrived at a Yonkers depot earlier this morning after the driver completed his shift." A witness told the Daily News, "The bus was heading downtown. The car swerved in front of the bus. The bus tried to avoid an accident and curved into the delivery guy... He didn't even see him."
The bicyclist, Qi Yu Weng, 28, had been traveling south and had fallen off his electric bike at Second Avenue and East 96th Street; the MTA bus was also going south and ran over Weng. It took a while to identify Weng; the News reports, "Restaurant workers were even escorted to the body at one point to see if they could identify the man." A doctor who came upon the scene told us that it was a distressing scene, "In the middle of 96th lying between two idling autos was a young man who was seriously injured and, at that time, dead. He was prone, face in the pavement. Skull crushed with his brains splattered across the intersection... I pray for his peace."
The News' witness, Kazi Hoque, blamed the accident on the Second Avenue subway construction in the area, "The construction kills everything around here and now it kills people." The NYPD, which does not suspect criminality, will interview the bus driver, who will also be tested for drugs and alcohol.
