New York City’s housing authority said it would begin issuing delayed Section 8 rental assistance program payments to landlords on Monday after a disruption linked to the recent federal government shutdown.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development alerted public housing agencies across the country, including NYCHA, that funding for December would be delayed. The money helps landlords cover rent for tenants enrolled in the Section 8 voucher program.
On Saturday, NYCHA said it had received the necessary funds from HUD and expects landlords to begin receiving payments shortly.
“Following notice from HUD that payments to Section 8 landlords would be delayed this month, NYCHA is happy to report that it has now received full funding from HUD and will promptly process payments,” the agency said in a statement. “NYCHA’s Section 8 payments to landlords are contingent on federal funding, with the Authority serving as a pass-through for Housing Assistance Payments. It is NYCHA's standard procedure to pay its Section 8 landlords as soon as is reasonably practicable following its receipt of funding from HUD.”
The payments are expected to begin processing on Monday, Dec. 8, officials said.
The recent federal shutdown was the longest in U.S. history, ending last month and disrupting funding for critical social programs that support low-income Americans, including housing and food assistance.
