Police are searching for an SUV driver they say fatally struck a woman crossing a Manhattan street Thursday night and drove away.

NYPD officials said the collision happened around 7 p.m. while the driver was trying to make a right turn from Clinton Street to Stanton Street on the Lower East Side. The driver hit the woman as she was crossing Stanton Street from south to north in the crosswalk, according to police.

Witnesses told police the black SUV fled the scene immediately after striking the woman, officials said. First responders took her to Bellevue Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities said they are still working to identify the woman, as well as the make and model of the car.

NYPD data shows there were no traffic deaths in the 7th Precinct, which covers the Lower East Side, this year through Dec. 14. That was down from six by the same point last year, all of which involved pedestrians. Citywide, traffic deaths are down 20% since 2024, the data shows.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and may be updated.
