A police officer shot two people during an encounter in Newark on Monday afternoon, killing one and wounding the other, authorities said.

The shooting happened shortly after 1 p.m., when Newark police came across several civilians near Ross Street and Evergreen Avenue, according to the New Jersey attorney general’s office.

Officials did not immediately provide further details about the encounter or the identities of those shot, but said the AG’s office is investigating the incident.

The people who were shot were taken to University Hospital, where the man was pronounced dead and the other person was being treated, officials said.

No police officers were injured during the incident, though one was taken to the hospital for evaluation and was later released, according to the AG’s office.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said in a statement late Monday that officials were following “strict guidelines” around police shooting investigations.

“It is a heartbreaking tragedy for everyone involved when a police officer feels the need to draw [their] weapon — and so much more so when they are compelled to fire,” he said. “I ask our residents to pray with us for all those affected, and to show patience until the investigation is completed.”
