The Greenwich Village man who was arrested on Saturday after police allegedly found explosive powder and a sawed off shotgun in his pregnant girlfriend's apartment was indicted today by a grand jury. A clean-shaven Aaron Greene, 31, was indicted on charges stemming from his arrest for felony criminal possession of a loaded firearm and criminal possession of an explosive substance with intent to use. DNAinfo reports that Greene "appeared pale and drawn during his brief court appearance and did not speak."
A request for bail was shot down (sorry), and Greene was then escorted back to jail to cool his heels until January 29th, when he is expected to enter a not-guilty plea. Both Greene and Dalton-grad Morgan Gliedman—who is still hospitalized after giving birth two days after her arrest—face up to 15 years prison on explosives and firearms possession charges. Police sources also tell the Post they found manuals with titles including, “Terrorist Encyclopedia,” “FM 5-25 Explosives and Demolition,” “FM 5-31 Booby Traps,” “Improvised and Modified Firearms: Deadly Homemade Weapons” and “The Do It Yourself Submachine Gun.”
In an interview with the Post on Rikers Island, Greene insisted, "It was a very small amount of experimental fireworks. I was going to take it out in the country and try it out — just an experiment. I’m a sportsman, an outdoorsman. Hunting and fishing." The powder found in the apartment has been identified as Hexamethylene Triperoxide Diamine (HMTD), which was one of the components in the explosives to be used by Ahmed Ressam, the "millennium bomber" who planned to bomb LAX on New Year's Eve in 1999. HMTD was also likely to be used in the foiled bombings of transatlantic flights in 2005.
Greene's parents, who own a multi-million-dollar apartment on Crosby Street, attended their son's court hearing today but declined to speak to reporters.
