Yesterday afternoon police entered the Queens apartment of Migdalia Vera and found a grisly scene. In one room was the 57-year-old woman's son, Rene Vera, dead from a stab wound to the midsection. And in another room they found Migdalia, alive with a self-inflicted stab wound of her own. Initial reports indicate that the mother killed her 38-year-old, wheelchair-bound, son—who suffered from cerebral palsy—as a mercy killing before trying to take her own life.

According to a News source police think Rene asked his mother to help him (though neighbors were unclear how communicative he was). "They believe she assisted in doing it, that it was possibly his wishes," a source told the News. "She was saying he was very depressed being that he has cerebral palsy."

The elder Vera was taken to New York Hospital-Queens for treatment where she is in stable condition. She is expected to be charged with murder.
