Snow day! For New York City Public Schools, anyway (and colleges and universities—Columbia, NYU, New School, SVA are closed!). After previously saying that NYC public schools would be open today despite the snow, the Department of Education has changed course and closed schools for the day. After school activities and all PSAL events are also canceled. It's the second time schools have been closed for snow this month.Time to pull out that snow gear again for some more fun in the parks (which are dangerous)! City offices, however, will remain open.
The MTA says "subways, buses, railroads and bridges & tunnels are scheduled to operate at normal or near normal morning rush hour service levels." But subways do have the "cold weather service plan" in effect, impacting some service. As of this time, the MTA's website says only the J/M/Z line is affected. The Staten Island Ferry is running a three-boat schedule with boats every 20 minutes through 9AM.
NJ Transit buses are not running in Northern New Jersey, but NJT rail lines are honoring bus passes. The LIRR is planning regular service, but check their site for updates. Metro North is operating on a Winter Weather Schedule, with schedule changes on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven Lines. If you're planning on flying out of an area airport, check with your airline for cancellations and delays.
For the February 10 Snowmageddon, the city called a snow day the day before. We'll see if people complain that today's snow day was announced too late!
