A Staten Island man filed a harrowing police report this weekend, claiming his SUV had been stolen with his 4-year-old son strapped in the backseat. It turns out, though, that he merely misplaced the toddler, then fabricated the stolen car story for the cops. This kid's going to have so much leverage when it comes to extending curfew one day.
Tottenville resident Terry Liaros, 46, called cops at around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, alleging that his Toyota 4-Runner had been swiped outside his home, where he claimed he'd briefly left it running with his 4-year-old son in the backseat. Officers responded quickly, eventually finding the car a few blocks away; shortly after that, a neighbor found the little boy wandering around, and alerted the police.
In a surveillance video taken just prior to the stolen car report, though, officers spotted Liaros's vehicle repeatedly circling the neighborhood...with Liaros behind the wheel. Apparently, Liaros's son wasn't kidnapped at all—he hadn't gotten out of the car after Liaros returned home post-shopping with him and his two older brothers, and ended up wandering off by himself. "I’m sorry, I f-ked up,’’ Liaros allegedly told investigators. “I don’t need to make excuses for losing my kid."
Liaros was arrested and charged with filing a false report.
