The Port Authority says the airport expects to reopen the runway by 6 a.m Saturday on the busy holiday travel weekend.

The sinkhole was found near the runway Wednesday morning, causing delays and cancellations.

A fatal crash at LaGuardia led to crowding at Newark and JFK as some fliers rebooked flights during an already-hectic travel period from the partial government shutdown.

Port Authority executives say the crash happened on a runway as the plane was landing and the rescue vehicle was responding to a separate incident.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.

The improvements also include increased service at peak times and a dedicated pick-up and drop-off area at the airport.
