A few minutes ago, the LIRR wrote on Twitter, "The 4:52 PM train from New York due in to Babylon at 5:55 PM has been canceled." And now we know why. The MTA writes, "Due to an Amtrak derailment that is blocking one of the East River Tunnels, the LIRR will be required to cancel a number of eastbound trains this evening during the PM rush hour. Customers should also anticipate delays. Please listen closely to announcements."

In a statement, the MTA elaborates that they will cancel 16 eastbound trains during the evening rush hour, and that "Some LIRR customers leaving Manhattan during the PM Peak should expect some and trains that are more crowded than usual." And while some trains on the Babylon, Port Washington, Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson and Long Beach branches will be extended to accomodate passengers, the 5:32 p.m. train to Far Rockaway "will be accommodated by the 5:33 PM train from New York to Hicksville. They will transfer at Jamaica for connecting service to the 5:50 PM train from Atlantic Terminal to Far Rockaway which will depart Jamaica approximately 6:10 PM." Below is a full explanation of all the delays.
