The first issue of Charlie Hebdo to appear since last week's horrifying massacre at the satirical magazine's Paris office is coming to the U.S. Or is it? New York City bookstores are getting requests for the issue, but it's unclear if they'll be able to meet the demand.
A few stores, like 192 Books in Chelsea and Unnameable Books in Prospect Heights, are sticking hard and fast to their books-only, no-magazine policy. (It seems to us like a magazine whose demand increased more than fiftyfold overnight might be a good cause for an exception, but maybe that’s why we don’t own a bookstore.)
Those shops that have placed orders have little idea as to when or whether they will get their hands on any copies.
“It’s unlikely or uncertain whether the U.S. will get any copies because there’s such high demand in Europe right now, so we’re on a waitlist,” said a salesperson at Book Culture.
Similarly, a voicemail recording at Albertine Book Store informed callers requesting information about Charlie Hebdo that, while they had placed an order, they couldn’t confirm whether it would be filled. Foreign magazine distributor LMPI told TIME that some issues were headed to the U.S., but for now, the initial release is estimated to be only about 300 copies split primarily between New York and San Francisco.
In other words, most book sellers are just as in the dark as we are. Apparently not as in the dark as the people manning the phones at Housing Works and Bookcourt, though, who didn’t recognize the name of the magazine when we called to find out if they carried it.
We’re betting on Albertine and Around the World as the most likely New York recipients of Charlie Hebdo early next week. In the meantime, curious readers can check out the Daily Beast’s English-language synopsis of the issue. The Post also reported an English version available for download beginning tomorrow morning, but otherwise we’ve only heard tell of the print versions that are making their way across the pond.
If you've spotted it for sale somewhere in NYC, please let us know in the comments.
