A Zambian diplomat suspected of DWI struck a police van in Jamaica, Queens early this morning, but was not charged with a crime because he holds diplomatic immunity.
An NYPD spokesman said that the diplomat sideswiped the marked police vehicle shortly after midnight in front of 88-10 180th Street. The two officers in the van were taken to Long Island Manhasset Hospital with minor injuries, while the diplomat, who the Post identifies as Langford Banda, was taken to the 112th Precinct station. After identifying him as a member of the Zambian consulate, he was released, the spokesman said.
A woman who answered the phone at the Zambian consulate declined to comment.
A spokesperson for the Queens DA's office said that the NYPD never consulted them on the matter, and declined further comment.
