A Long Island man who is on trial for attacking a psychiatrist with a sledgehammer and knife allegedly took selfies after nearly killing his victim. Jacob Nolan, 23, was arrested in November 2012 for brutally assaulting Michael Weiss inside his West 57th Street home office, and the building manager testified this week that he came upon Nolan shortly after the attack, still wearing a t-shirt drenched in blood: “At the time, it seemed that he was taking pictures of himself,” building manager Andrew Goldfarb said, according to the Post.
"Everything happened so fast. I was screaming for help. I knew I was being stabbed even before I knew I was hit," Weiss said in court describing the attack. Weiss testified that he had been in session with a different patient when Nolan suddenly turned up at his office unannounced on Nov. 12th, 2012. "Out of the corner of my eye, I looked up and I saw Jacob coming at me, swinging a sledgehammer at me, at my head," Weiss said. "He tried to pick up the sledgehammer to strike me a second time but he struggled with it, and he took out of a knife and repeatedly stabbed me."
"I was trying to get away and continued to scream for help and Jacob continued to stab me," he added. "My arms, my legs, my back, my abdomen, my chest."
Weiss testified earlier this week that he believes that Nolan was manipulated by Pamela Buchbinder, Weiss' ex (with whom he has a child) and Nolan's aunt, into killing him in order to cash in on his $1.5 million insurance policy. Days before the attack, Weiss had reluctantly agreed to put Buchbinder's name on his insurance policy. Nolan had initially claimed that he came to the office that day to pickup financial aid papers for Weiss and Buchbinder’s then-four-year-old son.
Defense attorneys have argued that Nolan has a history of mental illness and was brainwashed by Buchbinder, who is also a psychiatrist, to attack Weiss on her behalf. Nolan had been living with Buchbinder at the time of the attack, and was also the godfather of the child.
Weiss also testified that he heard Nolan talk to a woman on the phone after the attack. Jurors were also shown surveillance video and stills of Buchbinder and Nolan at a Home Depot purchasing the sledgehammer used in the attack.
